Systems Design Engineer

The ideal candidate will have 5-7 yrs of Industrial Manufacturing experience with a focus on Test Stand technology with a systems integrator or drive systems manufacturer. Automotive Industry is Preferred. WMEEC program graduate is a plus.

We are currently seeking a Systems Design Engineer for the Test Stand Team. The Test Stand team designs and manufactures highly-engineered electrical / electronic control products and systems, including solid state motor starters, variable frequency drives, OEM-specific industrial control panels, and complex control systems, ranging from 5-10,000 horsepower and 200-13,800 volts.

This position will join a team of designers and application engineers in the specification, design and manufacturing of industrial control/drive systems for the automotive testing and paper converting industries. Key responsibility will include completing the design of systems on-time, within budgetary guidelines, and meeting the required quality and performance specifications. Assist and cooperate with the production and test teams to ensure accurate manufacturing and verification of systems prior to shipment.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering or related field, plus 2 years of experience, or Master’s degree in the same fields and 6 months of experience with the skill set described above. May include work experience gained while acquiring a Master’s degree.
  • Design engineering experience and demonstrable technical knowledge of low voltage variable speed drives, motors, filters, and electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with power electronics, electrical packaging (enclosures), and printed circuit designs.
  • Experience and understanding of motion control theory and algorithms.
  • Awareness of various electrical control components and selection criteria as it relates to cost, certifications and quality.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form. Strong commitment to customer service and teamwork.
  • Availability to travel to support sales and investigate issues at customer installations.
  • Good communication skills (oral, written and listening) and ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups of professionals.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365 suite of tools.

Additional Desired Qualifications

Familiarity with PLCs, embedded controllers and data acquisition systems.
Exposure to control systems analysis tools (e.g. LTSpice, Matlab, Simulink, etc.).

Experience with 2-D and 3-D AutoCad/Solidworks CAD software
Exposure to field bus serial networks (e.g. Profibus, EtherNet, etc.).

Understanding of C/C++ programming.
Exposure to UL and CE as it relates to industrial control panels.

 

Green Belt in Lean Six Sigma with expectation for further belt advancement.

  • Design and engineer systems accurately and on schedule.
  • Investigate and employ new components and technologies for use in systems.
  • Confirm system design and components meet certification requirements (UL508A, CE, IEEE, etc.).
  • Continuously assess design and investigate new/alternative components as applied to cost savings, quality improvement and certification requirements.
  • Assist sales engineers in their effort to provide accurate quotes. Interpret quotes, communicate with customers and work with other designers/engineers to ensure systems meet expectations.
