Health & Safety Manager

The ideal candidate will have 3+ years of Safety experience in the production or manufacturing industry with at least 3 years concentrated in Health and Safety related roles at a manufacturing/production facility. MSH and OSHA knowledge are required.

The Health & Safety Manager will be charged with ensuring a safe working environment for all and compliance with MSHA, OSHA, and food/feed regulations, while supporting employee overall health and well-being.

Lead Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a robust and sustainable health and safety culture
  • Develop systems to identify health and safety hazards. Develop and implement controls, as necessary
  • Develop and maintain a rewards-based safety awareness and improvement program.
  • Lead safety walks with members of the management team to inspect, evaluate, and improve as required, all workplace environments, equipment, and practices.
  • Investigate and report internally and externally as necessary, injuries, accidents, and near misses. Have a working knowledge of incident investigation and analysis tools. Work with the appropriate team members to Identify root causes and corrective actions. Clearly communicate the outcomes to all employees.
  • Conducts safety training and education programs for all employees as required to meet applicable regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports to ensure compliance with all applicable safety, environmental, and feed regulations. Ensure reports are submitted on time to all governmental agencies as required.
  • Conduct and evaluate random drug testing, new employee drug testing, noise testing, dust testing, and other compliance tests as required.
  • Partner with HR to monitor open worker’s compensation claims and coordinate activities to minimize lost and/or restricted workdays. Serve as HR contact for onboarding of new employees and initial questions and concerns at the Fort Dodge and Gilmore City operations.
  • Maintain all right-to-know programs.
  • From time to time, other duties will be assigned

Desired skills and experience
  • Associates degree required, strongly prefer bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health or related field
  • Will consider candidates with at least 3 years of safety experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment in lieu of education
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a health and safety-related role in a manufacturing/production facility
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail. The position requires skills and the ability to connect with and educate employees on the importance of safe work practices and environmental compliance. It is also important to communicate effectively with government officials
  • Knowledge, experience, and familiarity with MSHA, Iowa OSHA, regulations
  • Mechanical aptitude to understand the inner workings of equipment, the application of guards, and practices needed to maintain a safe working environment
  • Organizing and planning skills are required to successfully maintain records and develop training plans
  • General safety program management with strong knowledge and understanding of OSHA and other industry-related safety regulations required
  • Experience interacting/interfacing with regulatory agencies
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification is a strong plus.
  • Experience with MS Word and Excel
  • Experience with health and safety management software is a plus (e.g., Intelex, Gensuite)
  • Valid driver’s license
